Pittsburgh's Line and Secondary Carry a Nine-Win Profile

Pittsburgh does not have the flashiest roster in the ACC, but it has the two things that travel: an elite offensive line and an elite secondary. The projection rewards that formula with a 9-3 outlook and favors the Panthers in all but one game. Pat Narduzzi, now in his twelfth year, has built the kind of sturdy, well-coached team that wins the games it should and hangs around in the ones it should not.

Built at the line and in the back end

The offensive line grades at the very top of college football, and the secondary is right there with it. Those are the two hardest positions to build and the two most valuable to own. A great line lets Pittsburgh control tempo and protect a young quarterback, and a great secondary lets the defense take away the explosive plays that beat good teams. Add a strong linebacker group, and the spine of this roster is legitimately excellent.

That combination gives the Panthers a high floor. Even in a bad matchup, an elite line and an elite secondary keep games close, and close games are where a veteran staff earns its keep.

The offense leans on a young quarterback

The question is the skill positions. Mason Heintschel takes over at quarterback with a grade that sits in the middle of the pack, and the running back room grades a notch below that. The talent to move the ball is there, especially behind that line, but the offense is more about efficiency than explosion. Pittsburgh will win by controlling the ball, leaning on the run, and letting the defense set up short fields.

If Heintschel develops faster than expected, the ceiling rises. If he does not, the line and defense are good enough to keep the Panthers in the nine-win range anyway.

One real roadblock

The schedule is kind with one glaring exception. Pittsburgh is favored in every game but the road trip to Miami, where the projection makes the Panthers a clear underdog. That is the game that likely separates them from the top of the ACC. The other close calls, at home against UCF and on the road at Louisville, are winnable and sit in Pittsburgh's favor.

Win the games they are favored in, split or steal the toss-ups, and the Panthers are looking at nine wins and a spot near the top of the conference. The Miami game is the ceiling test.

Bottom line

Expect 9-3, built on the offensive line and the secondary. Pittsburgh is not going to overwhelm anyone with skill talent, but it is going to be physical, disciplined, and hard to beat, which is the Narduzzi formula. The one game the projection flags as a likely loss is at Miami. Handle everything else, and the Panthers are a nine-win team with an outside path to the ACC title game.
